Sony unveils PS5 Pro, the most powerful and expensive gaming console on the market

Sony has finally confirmed the existence of the PS5 Pro by unveiling the technical specifications of this more powerful version of the PS5. Unsurprisingly, the price is significantly higher than that of the standard PS5 console.

It was during a technical presentation lasting over 9 minutes that Mark Cerny, the architect of the PS5, finally unveiled the PlayStation 5 Pro. This more powerful version of the console, released in 2020, has been the subject of numerous leaks and rumors since last year.

On the program of new features: a technical sheet which strengthens its game with a much more powerful GPU part, faster memory, more efficient ray tracing and the arrival of a new upscaling technology, PSSR.

A quick overview of the most powerful console on the market.

An upgraded and improved spec sheet

As with the PS4 Pro, this PS5 Pro is an update focused on enhancing the console’s gaming performance. It still relies on AMD architecture, but with modern improvements, emphasizing raw graphical power.

The console also becomes compatible with Wi-Fi 7, compared to the basic Wi-Fi 6 in the 2020 PlayStation 5.

Sony’s promised performance

According to Mark Cerny, the goal is to deliver a consistent 60 frames per second, even in Fidelity mode, allowing for 4K image quality without being limited to 30 frames per second.

Sony has focused on the graphics side, with a GPU that nearly doubles its number of Compute Units (+67%), promising a 45% faster rendering.

With this new GPU, the PS5 Pro ensures better performance, improved stability in games, and almost triple the performance in ray tracing. Mark Cerny gave examples of games like Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Hogwarts Legacy, and Spider-Man 2, which will have more realistic ray tracing effects.

Other games like The Last of Us: Part II and Horizon Forbidden West will also benefit from the PS5 Pro’s power, featuring more precise volumetric effects and specular details (like hair and foliage).

PSSR: Intelligent Upscaling for Your Games

In the same presentation, Mark Cerny finally detailed the workings of the PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) technology.

This is an upscaling and image reconstruction algorithm that boosts the performance of compatible PS5 games. In other words, it’s Sony’s answer to Nvidia’s well-known DLSS, widely used by PC gamers.

The PSSR first renders graphics at a lower resolution before upscaling them to match the resolution of your monitor or TV. Since the console processes graphics at a lower resolution, performance is significantly improved.

$380 More Than the Standard PS5

The PS5 Pro will be available on November 7, 2024, priced at $880. This version of the console includes 2TB of storage but does not come with a disc drive, which must be purchased separately.
